Mid-Autumn Festival: Celebrating Unity and harmony with Mooncakes and lanterns!

Mid-Autumn Festival get-together is always such a thrill! When you see lanterns of all shapes and sizes lighting up the night (especially those made by our Misses & Misters😊) and taste those sweet and innovative mooncakes that tantalize your taste buds, it’s just the perfect moment to cherish the warmth and togetherness with friends and family!

The Mid-Autumn or Mooncake Festival celebrated over 3000 years ago combines the symbolic richness of lanterns and mooncakes, each with its own history and significance.

Lanterns, with their vibrant designs and radiant glow, have a history deeply rooted in Chinese culture. They originally served as signals for coordinating rebel uprisings during the Tang Dynasty and evolved into a symbol of brightness, happiness, and reunion. Lanterns illuminate the path to unity, a central theme during the Mid-Autumn Festival, where families and friends come together to celebrate the full moon.

On the other hand, mooncakes carry a centuries-old legacy as offerings to the moon goddess and later during the Ming dynasty converted as secret messengers during a rebellion against the Mongols. Today, their round shape symbolizes unity and togetherness among families, even when physically separated, mooncakes represent the sweetness of familial bonds and friendships.

During the Mid-Autumn Festival, the combination of lanterns and mooncakes creates a harmonious celebration where the glow of lanterns mirrors the moon’s luminance, and the sharing of mooncakes reflects the sharing of love and unity among loved ones. It’s a time when traditions passed down through generations continue to connect people, embracing the beauty of the moon and the warmth of human connection.

The Mid-Autumn Festival holds a special place in the heart of Head Teacher Hui Zee as it symbolizes her vision of creating a harmonious society. Morning Stars Playhouse had some exciting events planned to mark this year’s festival!
